Welcome from the Dean

Drew Ness, Dean of International

Since this is a welcome, it’s important I start off with this: Welcome!

I don’t know whether you’ve read any “Welcome from the Dean” messages on other college or university websites before this one. If so, you probably expect me to tell you how great we are, how international we are, and how perfect a choice we are for you. If that’s the case, please accept my apologies in advance. While I know we’re an excellent college with a 50-year history of producing successful graduates, and that we are one of the most internationalized colleges in Canada, the only person who can figure out whether we’re a perfect fit for you, is you - along with your family, friends, and others who care about you, of course.

So what can you tell the important people in your life about Humber? Humber is a place for students who care about their futures, and are willing to work to make their futures better. Here, students have all the opportunities in the world to find success. That statement probably doesn’t sound much different from the ones you read about other schools. While the statement may not be much different, the reality of what Humber has to offer you is.

How do you figure that out for yourself? Start here: Look through our international site and specific program pages. Learn about the hundreds of opportunities for internship or work placement. Read up on our unique Global Citizenship Certificate. You’ll quickly see how much opportunity is available to Humber students. That word “available” is important to take note of – it’s available, but up to you and every other student to take advantage of. When you browse our site, you’ll also see what we do to help students who ask for it, and how that help translates into better grades and better jobs, which means better opportunities.

There are great opportunities on every corner of our campus – in our labs, with our exceptional faculty members, in our warm and modern student spaces, in beautiful Toronto. But they’re not only on our campuses.

You’ll see throughout the website that there are opportunities around the world for you just by being a Humber student. Study for a semester on exchange. Have a work placement in another country. Join a short-term academic journey to one of our many international university partners. Or grow your global outlook with specialized courses and studies on our campus, as you learn, study and grow with students from over 135 countries who all call Humber home.

I’ve been lucky through the course of my 30-year career to see what the commitment and passion required to produce excellent teaching and learning looks like, and I see it at Humber, every single day. My experience has also taught me how complex a decision it is to decide whether we’re right for you. So I’ll close with an invitation: We’re here, day after day, month after month, year after year, to talk with you to help you decide whether Humber is right for you. You are invited to reach out to us to get the answers you need to decide about us. We would love to hear from you.
