Scholarship Dinner Celebrates Perseverance

Scholarship Dinner

Late last week Drew Ness, Dean of International, along with members of the Humber International Scholarship Selection Committee, gathered to meet, mingle and celebrate with international scholarship recipients over a dinner in The Humber Room.

We weren’t surprised to learn that this year’s scholarship winners hail from a variety of home countries; Japan, Peru, Jamaica, Mexico and Ukraine among them. Also unsurprisingly, these top students cover a wide breadth of programs such as Film & Media, International Development, Marketing, and Culinary Skills. However, global and academic diversity aside, there was one thing they all shared before ever meeting, and that was the sense of accomplishment and excitement they each felt when they received the e-mail from Humber saying they had been selected as a winner!

For one of the students now pursuing a Bachelor of Film & Media, this scholarship meant not only a relief on his student budget, but the opportunity to actually pursue his dream, with this kind of program is not commonly found in his home country. At the outset, most students felt that submitting the application was a long shot – but most realized that just because something may be hard work or intangible at the time, that they should still give their best effort and hope it pays off. And as this group learned, indeed it can!

These students, like all international applicants, were given the opportunity to be granted with scholarships from a single time $1000 award, up to awards of $5000 renewable over four years of study. We salute these students in their perseverance and achievement, and in taking the next step to pursue their academic dreams and future career goals!
