Passport to Success

By: Komal Nanda, Business – Accounting (Home country: India)

While studying at Humber College, I wanted to get socially involved on campus and take part in different co-curricular activities offered by the International Centre and other departments. I volunteered for four departments at Humber. I was also a Senior Connect Buddy at the International Center.

By the end of my first semester, Matthew McDonald, an international student advisor, introduced me to the “Passport to Success” Program. This program is designed to encourage full-time Humber students to become more engaged in their overall experience at Humber College. Students gain points by attending workshops and activities that will develop their skills, experiences and attitude. Each activity and workshop is worth 1 point. This program has four level to be earned – Starter (4 points), Bronze (6 points), Silver (8 points) and Gold (10 points). Starter(s) will get $5 Tim Horton’s card, Bronze will entered to win a $50 gift card, Silver will be entered into a $100 gift card and Gold will be entered for a $300 gift card.

This program best suited my interest, and I participated in my second, third and fourth semesters. Moreover, I achieved the highest level (Gold) by getting 10 points from all of my semesters. Luckily, I also got $300 gift card in my last semester!  I mainly participated in the Learning skills workshops, International Events and Trips, HSF Volunteer Crew and other activities on campus. While participating in all these activities, not only did I make new friends but I also improved my leadership and interpersonal skills. This program motivated me to take part in more and more activities on campus and develop my skills.

I would encourage all current Humber students to take part in this program. You will not only develop your skills while taking part in workshops and activities but you will also get incentive by completing certain points. The incentive is not just the draw. You will also earn a statement of achievement and get a reference letter!
